A Resource About Marfan Syndrome
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
People who dial 1-800-8-MARFAN can now get information to help them
diagnose and obtain treatment for Marfan Syndrome, an inherited disease of the
body's connective tissue that affects an estimated 40,000 Americans.
People with Marfan are generally taller than other members of their
families, have long arms and are often near sighted. Marfan can be fatal if
not diagnosed and treated because it sometimes causes the main artery from the
heart (aorta) to tear or burst. Although a gene analysis test for Marfan is
being developed, a special echocardiogram and a slit lamp eye exam to search
for lens dislocation are the only diagnostic tests currently available.
The new 800 number functions with live operators from Monday to Friday,
8:30 AM to 3:30 PM Eastern time. At other hours, you may leave your name and
address on their answering machine to receive the publications describing
Marfan Syndrome, its diagnosis and treatment, that they offer. Information
can also be obtained by writing NMF, 382 Main Street, Port Washington, NY
11050.
